the reluctant fundamentalist

April 16, 2009

i usually fall asleep shortly once i start reading something in bed at bedtime.

this book however kept me up till the next morning at 1am!
once i start, i couldn't stop!
as a result i was like a zombie today.
i wasn't excited at all when my mister urged me to read it even though he said it's got good reviews
but to my surprise, it was an excellent read.
i was totally immersed in the tale.
it is so beautifully written in my opinion. :)
here's the synopsis
At a café table in Lahore, a bearded Pakistani man converses with a suspicious, and possibly armed, American stranger. As dusk deepens to night, he begins the tale that has brought them to this fateful meeting. . .

Changez is living an immigrant’s dream of America. At the top of his class at Princeton, he is snapped up by Underwood Samson, an elite firm that specializes in the “valuation” of companies ripe for acquisition. He thrives on the energy of New York and the intensity of his work, and his infatuation with regal Erica promises entrée into Manhattan society at the same exalted level once occupied by his own family back in Lahore.

For a time, it seems as though nothing will stand in the way of Changez’s meteoric rise to personal and professional success. But in the wake of September 11, he finds his position in his adopted city suddenly overturned, and his budding relationship with Erica eclipsed by the reawakened ghosts of her past. And Changez’s own identity is in seismic shift as well, unearthing allegiances more fundamental than money, power, and perhaps even love.

Elegant and compelling, Mohsin Hamid’s second novel is a devastating exploration of our divided and yet ultimately indivisible world.

dayswithmyfather.com

April 13, 2009

a heart wrenching website.

consisting of an ongoing record of phillip toledano's 98 yr old father who has dementia, and of their relationship, of their remaining days together.
the few words and beautiful photography deeply touch my heart.
makes me feel like crying as i feel so guilty,
so guilty of taking my loved ones for granted!

the power of the cross

April 11, 2009

Oh, to see the dawn

Of the darkest day:

Christ on the road to Calvary.

Tried by sinful men,

Torn and beaten, then

Nailed to a cross of wood.

CHORUS:

This, the pow'r of the cross:

Christ became sin for us;

Took the blame, bore the wrath—

We stand forgiven at the cross.

Oh, to see the pain

Written on Your face,

Bearing the awesome weight of sin.

Ev'ry bitter thought,

Ev'ry evil deed

Crowning Your bloodstained brow.

Now the daylight flees;

Now the ground beneath

Quakes as its Maker bows His head.

Curtain torn in two,

Dead are raised to life;

"Finished!" the vict'ry cry.

Oh, to see my name

Written in the wounds,

For through Your suffering I am free.

Death is crushed to death;

Life is mine to live,

Won through Your selfless love.

FINAL CHORUS:

This, the pow'r of the cross:

Son of God—slain for us.

What a love! What a cost!

We stand forgiven at the cross.

one story

April 11, 2009

i'm the sort of person who takes a long long time to finish a novel, no matter how good it is.

i'm the sort who reads slowly and likes to take my time to digest what i'm reading.
yet i'm quite impatient and like to move on to different things after a week or so.
as a result, i often don't complete the books i've started reading.
but one day, about two months back, my mister subscribed to one story and the book was mailed to us.
he was very excited about it but he had work to clear that night, so his mistress took it as her companion that night.
it was a small and thin, pocket size book, containing one short story of not more than 8000 words.
its cover was plain with no fancy pictures but just the title in simple font, printed on a single coloured paper.
to my amazement, it was a splendid read on "a splendid life", finished within one and a half hour!
i've never succeeded completing a novel late at night in one sitting!
ever since, i've been looking forward to receiving a new story from one story.
if you feel that you haven't had a good read lately due to time constraint, check out one story!
here's their mission:
One Story is a non-profit literary magazine that features one great short story mailed to subscribers every three weeks. Our mission is to save the short story by publishing in a friendly format that allows readers to experience each story as a stand-alone work of art and a simple form of entertainment. One Story is designed to fit into your purse or pocket, and into your life.

Because we like a challenge we will publish each writer one time only. This prevents us from relying on a stable of writers and helps us find new and exciting voices.

tokyo disneyland

April 8, 2009
we were exhausted on the first day from the night flight!
we've learnt that it's a no no with young children!
poor lizzie hardly slept and threw up many times on the coach from airport to disneyland.
but thank God that we stayed at the newly open tokyo disneyland hotel which is gorgeous and situated just outside the park!
the cool air and the sight of the castle-like hotel and the amusement park quickly brighten up lizzie when she alighted from the coach.
we quickly went into the park after putting our luggage at the hotel.
unfortunately, it was so crowded at tokyo disneyland during this time as it is spring break for the japanese students.
we had to queue for rides, toilets, food and shopping!
it's tough with two young toddlers especially lizzie who wanted to be carried most of the time on the first day as she was tired and a little apprehensive of the new environment!
though she can take most rides, she's only comfortable taking those without much sound effects!
we went back to the hotel for a nap in the noon and went back into the park till dusk!
we had fantastic views of the whole park and fireworks at night from our room!
on the second day, we woke up at 7am,
ate our breakfast within 30min and started queuing at the gate of the disneyland.
although the tokyo disneyland residents enter the amusement park through a different entrance from the public, it was already crowded with people from the hotel.
but it was worse at the public entrance.
the moment we past the gate, both kaif and i raced into the park like everyone else!
it was such a frenzy!
while kaif ran to get fast pass for winnie the pooh rides with marissa in the patapum pouch, i ran and pushed lizzie in her stroller to her favourite dumbo elephant rides!
we were crazy! like all the japanese around us!
can't believe that we did these things for our kids!
i remembered that i was so cold that my ears hurt like mad!
i was running as fast as i could in my, not sports shoes, but only pair of lanvin ballerina flats!
so my feet were really numb with cold!
despite the tiredness and crowd, we were all very happy at the tokyo disneyland and will plan to return when marissa is much older.
its dreamlike land just makes you forget about all the cares in the world!
another thing which i'll never forget is that because lizzie was afraid of taking pictures with all the disney characters, her mommy, i, had to squeeze through the crowd to take memorable photos with them!
even baby marissa managed to take 3 rides at disneyland – a small world, winnie the pooh and car racing with mommy who drove with one hand! ;p
